Characteristics of tide by measuring temporal change of surface level in Lake Sanaru which is tidal brackish lake left far from seashore were investigated. Tidal amplitude attenuates and phase becomes late while tidal wave propagates to upstream on the long river where cross-sectional area is small. Consequently, tidal range in Lake Sanaru attenuates in 1/3 or more of that in Lake Hamana, and tide in Lake Sanaru is delayed from 3 to 5 hours than that in Lake Hamana. The strength of tidal water exchange and mean residence time of fresh water which flowed into Lake Sanaru during precipitation are estimated. The water exchange ratio by semi-diurnal tide between Lake Sanaru and Lake Hamana is approximately 0.13, and the mean ratio of exchanged water volume to capacity of Lake Sanaru is about 2%. In addition, mean residence time to take for fresh water to be discharged from Lake Sanaru by tidal water exchange is estimated to be from 22 to 26 days. It is supposed that tidal water exchange between Lake Sanaru and Lake Hamana is controlled or suppressed by mixing or dilution process in lower Shin River. Effect of suppression by the physical process in lower Shin River intensifies exclusiveness of Lake Sanaru, therefore, it is difficult for the pollutant in Lake Sanaru to be discharged from the lake and is easy to stay in the lake.

岸から離れた感潮汽水湖である佐鳴湖において水位測定を行ない, 佐鳴湖の潮汐の特性を調べた.潮汐が浜名湖から通水断面積が小さく細長い下流河川を遡上する際に振幅の減衰と位相の遅れを生じ, 佐鳴湖の潮汐は浜名湖よりも潮差が1/3強程度に減衰し, 潮時が約3~5時間遅れることがわかった.塩分をトレーサーとして, 潮汐による水交換の大きさや降水に伴って佐鳴湖に流入した淡水の湖内への平均滞留時間を見積もった.半日周期潮汐による佐鳴湖水と浜名湖水の交換率は約0.13であり, 水交換量の湖水容積に対する平均的な比率は約2% であった.また, 上流から佐鳴湖に流入した淡水が潮汐による水交換によって湖外に排出されるまでの平均滞留時間は22~26日と見積もられた.佐鳴湖と浜名湖の間の水交換は下流河川における混合・希釈過程によってコントロールされ, 抑制されていることが推察される.この下流河川における物理過程による抑制の効果が佐鳴湖の閉鎖性を強めており, それによって佐鳴湖内の汚濁物質は湖外に排出され難く, 湖内に滞留し易くなっていると考えられる.
