description The historical acquisition of a Chinese character for tuna species in Japanese language is reviewed by examining ancient and recent literatures. A set of six Chinese characters identified as tuna and other species first appeared in around 1000 B.C. This study found historical changes of meanings of these Chinese characters express tuna species in the modern era. Findings from this study may open the door to identify historical uses and status of fishery resources from paleographical archives.
description 漢字の鮪が日本でマグロ類を示すようになった経緯を日中の主な古典籍や本草書から追跡した.鮪とその関連漢字は紀元前1,000年の「周禮」にすでに現れ,続いて「詩経」,「爾雅」,「説文解字」にも見られたが,これらに魚種特定につながる情報はなかった.3-4世紀の「爾雅注」のころから魚種が特定される記述が現れ,諸文献の鮪とその関連文字は中国産のチョウザメ類3種のシナヘラチョウザメPsephurus gradius,ダブリーチョウザメAcipencer daburianus,カラチョウザメA. sinensisのいずれかと考えられた.鮪の字の示すと思われる魚種は文献毎に異同があるが,「經典釋文」の記述はシナヘラチョウザメによく合致し,これを「本草綱目」などの諸文献が継承したと考えられた.漢字は大陸から淡水大型魚の乏しい日本に導入され,そのうち鮪の字は記紀万葉の時代には海産大型魚の「志毘=しび」を指すようになった.江戸期には鮪はマグロ類を示すようになったが,一部の本草学者は,本来の鮪が日本産魚類に合致しないことに気がついた.しかしその魚種特定には至らないか,あるいはカジキ類等に誤った特定をした.鮪が本来示していた魚種の,分類学的な観点からの推定は長らく行われなかったが,「本草綱目」が和訳された際に,その解説で木村重がシナヘラチョウザメと比定した.木村の研究系譜は,マグロ類の研究者の岸上鎌吉と深い関係があるが,鮪の魚種推定への岸上の関与の確証は得られなかった.
